WORD Today August 10, 2013 ▬▬▬▬▬ 2 Corinthians 9: 6 - 10 John 12: 24 - 26 (Please read the Bible passages) ▬▬▬▬▬ Today is Feast Day of St. Lawrence. He was Archdeacon of the church in Rome in the 3rd century. Pope Sixtus placed him in charge of the church treasury and caring for the poor. The Roman Emperor Valerian wanted to destroy Christianity and had the Pope executed. Lawrence knew he would be next for he was now the highest church official left, so he distributed the church treasury to the poor of Rome. When the Emperor ordered Lawrence to surrender all the church treasures, he presented the poor, the blind, the crippled and the sick that he loved and served. Lawrence was executed in 258 AD, cooked to death on a gridiron. "He scatters afar, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." (2 Corinthians 9: 9) No one remembers or cares about the mighty Emperor who wanted it all. But St. Lawrence has been honored by the universal Church every year in every century. And eternally in heaven. Let us ask God for the faith, love of service and courage He gave to St. Lawrence, that we too may receive the reward Jesus promises: "Where I am, there also shall my servant be." (John 12:26)
