WORRIED ABOUT FITTING IN? Moving to Nashville in June of 2011, I know what it is like to be an “outsider.” But I knew before moving here that being an outsider was a matter of history and not destiny. Of course I would be “an outsider,” I was relocating from outside the city and state. It was also understandable, for me or anyone starting a new business, to wonder about how I would be received. I use the word “wonder” and not “worry” intentionally. “Worry” begins by anticipating problems, scanning with a negative filter, and establishing both offensive and defensive strategies. “Wonder” anticipates an adventure of communicating, connecting, and contributing. And I never gave much thought to “fitting in.” To do so would be to anticipate a rigid and “fear based” system. What I anticipated doing was “STANDING OUT.” For me, that begins by adopting a comfortable stance of openness, interest in others, and delivering excellence in my profession. Many of my expressions of interest in the business of others and of networking have been reciprocated. Solid relationships have begun to be forged. Personal friendships are developing. Other offers have not been taken, not yet at least! Take it personally? Not at all. People have busy, complicated, and often challenging lives. Seeds planted months ago are just now beginning to come into the light. If I don’t “get it” I should get out of “soul biz!” Bottom line: Don’t worry about fitting in. Show up with a big smile, a warm handshake, and an open heart. So far, this new city feels like “a good fit.” Although I have no idea if I’m “standing out,” I’m feeling “outstanding.” Thank you Nashville!
