WORTH A LISTENING: Just took in Ken Burns wonderfully detailed account about the life of Jack Johnson; UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS - THE RISE AND FALL OF JACK JOHNSON. Like all of Ken Burns work it is fanatically researched, authoritatively detailed and beautifully presented. One of the films more enlightening aspects is its appropriately Jazz era inspired score by Wynton Marsalis. The composer draws upon blues, dance and jazz idioms of the period, conducting a small ensemble with all the right pieces and plenty of brass. The end result is music that is soulful, syncopated and very moving and is likely one of the finest jazz scores to have emerged since Duke Ellington did ANATOMY OF A MURDER. All of the music is beyond enjoyable, but there is one piece of score that is true ear candy and makes many appearances throughout the film. On the soundtrack it is titled What have you done? and with its dark, rhythmic and ominous overtones, it is (forgive the pun) a real knockout (the track is also a bit of a reworking of the unused score that Marsalis did for the film ROSEWOOD.) Enjoy the clips and, if you havent seen it already, by all means, I highly recommend checking out the documentary.
