WOULD RAISING THE MINIMUM WAGE TO $15.00 PER HOUR for entry-level - TopicsExpress

WOULD RAISING THE MINIMUM WAGE TO $15.00 PER HOUR for entry-level unskilled or low-skill positions really be helping anyone? Think about it... Entry-level positions, or jobs requiring limited education or skill, serve an important function in our society; these jobs are the entry point of employment...the training ground or starting off point from which bigger and better things are eventually sought. These are the jobs that teach an individual how to BE an employee...an introduction to how to function successfully in the working world. These positions have hardly ever been considered the stuff of which careers are made; it has always been pretty much understood that the paycheck you received from an entry-level job at an establishment like McDonalds or Wal-Mart was probably going to be just enough to put gas in your car for the week and pay for the movie you wanted to go see or to purchase the latest music CD. Everyone also knew that this was not the kind of money that would cover your rent, your mortgage, grocery bills, etc.. It was the job you had in high school...the kind of job you got when Mom and Dad were still footing most of the bills. The job you went to when you left the nearby campus or trade school, at which you were working toward your certification, or associates or undergraduate degree. So, what would be the result of turning these types of jobs into ones that pay $15.00 an hour? At first glance, one might think: More money...well...thats got to be a good thing, of course...right? Actually...not really. Basically, doing so will ironically work to entrap scores of people in a life of poverty...or, at best, mediocrity...if they are very lucky. It will effectively disincentivize millions of workers from taking the logical next steps to a life of recognized potential and heightened prosperity; instead of seeking out the education they need to further develop their skill sets and experience in order to take advantage of opportunities that will better their situations, they will be consigned to making considerably less advantageous use of their time. Instead of endeavoring to make the most of their potential, they will keep flipping burgers and mopping floors and pushing shopping carriages around the parking lot, because they now make JUST ENOUGH to get by every month. It is a sure recipe for stagnation and future discontent...a sure fire way to keep those dependent upon the government dependent upon the government...a circumstance which many Democratic politicians rely upon to maintain the entitlement society and their own power...the insidious modern-day equivalent of enslavement. The conversation about breaking the cycle of poverty in this country shouldnt start with money...it has to begin with education and opportunity. But those are just MY two cents--you should think about it and decide for yourself. Thanks for listening.
