WOW --- so I lit a powder keg this afternoon. I wanted to let you all know that I went through all the comments.....yes, even the hurtful ones, to try and see this issue from the other side. Full disclosure -- Im a vegetarian, and the thought of pulling the trigger on any sentient being repulses me. I dont understand why someone would want to do it. I also dont understand why someone buys meat from factory farms. But thats me. At the same time, I can also appreciate that making money off of animals is a necessity for millions of people around the world. My hope is that, we humans, who are at the top of the food chain, recognize that this is in fact a great responsibility. More research is coming out, almost daily, about how different species are more complex than weve given them credit for. Elephants have a memory and familial bonds that rival us humans. Chimps have been known to hold funerals for their friends. And chickens can actually do math better than toddlers. Sorry -- if you were going to eat chicken tonight. :) It is not reasonable to expect the world to become vegetarian, but is it reasonable to hope people will give more consideration to the animal products they buy or the types of things they do for entertainment? Yes. When it comes to hunting of big game there is a lot of opinions as to whether this is a necessary practice? Whether this actually boosts conservation in certain areas and helps the local economy? If were talking about the game reserves canned hunting in the U-S, which there are over 1000.....the answer is definitely NO. However, depending on who you ask, and depending on how its done, it might be a valuable tool in a place like South Africa. It doesnt sit well with me -- but I know, that that is my nature. So what do the experts say? They are decidedly split. According to this article from National Geographic....the Safari Club thinks its the only way to fund more conservation, whereas International Fund for Animal Welfare and Panthera (a big cat conservation group) say the hunters boast of big conservation benefits but the numbers dont support it. For me, its an interesting issue and one that I personally will examine further. And if it interests you at all, then I encourage you to do the same. Im reminded all the time, that just because we think something to be true....doesnt mean it is. - Nat news.nationalgeographic/news/2013/11/131119-melissa-bachman-lion-hunt-photo-conservation-animals/
