WOW, GREAT ARTICLE ON WHEEL RIMS AND WHEEL MAINTENANCE... First, why has wheel cleaning become such an important part of the over all detail today? Because of the birth of the spoke wheel, the entire wheel, calipers and tire are exposed to more abuse, brake dust and road grime then ever before making it one of the most time consuming projects in the detailing process. I never include a dirty, stained and pitted wheel in my traditional detail service package. Unless my client doesn’t care or does not want to spend the money to do them right. I don’t do anything for free! Never! I’ve mastered the art of upselling wheel cleaning, reconditioning and polishing as well as my new “wheel coating” process using Ceramic Pro 9H. I’ve learned to set the expectations and educate my clients on the art of restoring, cleaning and maintaining wheel rims and they love the whole concept and buy into it as they are supposed to do. There are several types of wheels on the market today. Chrome, Painted Alloy’s, Power Coated, Aluminum, machined, and many more! All wheels are treated differently for many reasons and many variables. I have watched so many detailers over the years cleaning wheels while attached to the vehicle. When watched closely its almost comical to see just how much time they spend on a wheel without considering the price they sold the complete detail for. It’s common for one to sell a detail and then watch them spend about 15 to 20 minutes on each wheel. That’s already an hour to an hour and a half and there is still the rest of the car to do. Ive seen some that spend up to 30 to 45 minutes per each wheel and no additional charge! Wondering why you may be spending too much time on the car? Your time spent has to be accounted in dollars because time is money! Today’s wheels are very complicated to maintain, clean and restore. I’ve got an amazing system and sales process I use with each client that allows me to charge anywhere from $50 to $150 per wheel up-sold and added onto my original traditional detailing service. This way, I’m very well compensated for all the additional time I spend on each wheel. As you can see in the photos I do a lot of work by hand but, keep in mind I do use a drill gun, extensions and a verity of polishing balls, polishing wheels, cones and pads for getting the job done right when need be. I have included in this Facebook post some very simple photos with captions of what I do to get the wheel cleaned properly and without the stress of wasting my time. There are plenty of great tools, brushes and other products to get wheels cleaned and polished. With the exception of wheel acid, I use most of them. Acid is the worst thing you can use on wheels and does nothing but create future damage. Removing the wheel from the vehicle is going to be a lot faster, safer and the results are going to be much better. Time is money and it’s easy to remove the wheel get it done right, pop it back on with amazing results. Hope you enjoy the photos and the photo captions and take some time to give me a call or send me an email if you have any questions or want to learn more about wheel cleaning being a “Big Money Maker”
