WRC Rally Australia: Mikkelsen eyes podium 3 September 2014 Volkswagen Motorsport II driver Andreas Mikkelsen targets rostrum on Rally Australia, adds if “we can fight for more, it would be perfect.” Volkswagen Motorsport II driver Andreas Mikkelsen says he will be “free to drive the way he wants to” and will be aiming for a podium on Rally Australia next week. The Norwegian took his third rostrum of the season last month on Rallye Deutschland and with a 36 point lead over Mads Ostberg in the battle for third place in the Drivers Championship now has a bit of a cushion. “I am really looking forward to Australia. Now, we have quite a good gap to fourth place in the championship, I think I can go to Australia without pressure on my shoulders. I can drive the way I really want to,” he said. “For sure, the aim in Australia is a podium finish,” he added. “That should be possible and if we can fight for more, it would be perfect. “Australia will be tough,” he continued, “but I feel more comfortable on gravel than on tarmac, so why not [go for it].” Looking back on the event in Germany, he explained that he treated it as something of a test. “We knew Rallye Deutschland was going to be tough. I didnt feel comfortable coming into it, so I decided to consider this event as a small test, get through it and get the mileage on tarmac, he confirmed. “Last time I did an asphalt rally that was in Spain [last year], where I did 2.5 stages and I went off. I needed the mileage in Germany and we did well, so hopefully this gives me a good feeling for the next tarmac round [coming up in France].”
