Wadala-Thane metro likely to get funds from World Bank. World Bank is likely to fund the proposed 30.8-km-long Wadala-Thane metro rail. As per initial discussions and planning done by civic, state and central government officials on the Wadala to Kasarvadavali (in Thane) metro rail, World Bank in all probability will provide loan for the project. Financial details or how much amount will come as loan is yet to be finalised, but for this metro rail, having an estimated cost of around Rs 22,000crore, World Bank will provide financial assistance, said an official of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The MMRDA is Special Planning Authority (SPA) for Wadala, which lacks public transportation options. To turn the marshy area into a business district on the lines of Bandra-Kurla Complex, metro rail was proposed in the master plan. Also, Kasarvadavali on Thanes Ghodbunder Road is a distant location, and it takes over half an hour to reach Kasarvadavali from Thane station. Due to high real estate prices, in the last half a decade, there has been tremendous increase in the population along Ghodbunder Road, and it will only multiply in the years to come. In all, 31 stations are likely to be constructed on the alignment, out of which 10 would be underground in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, due to lack of space on the arterial LBS Road. The planners redesigned the metro rail route as the metro rail master plan had recommended separate metro rails between Hutatma Chowk-Ghatkopar and Ghatkopar-Mulund. By mid-2010, it was decided to extend this route to Teen Haath Naka in Thane from Mulund. But, later Hutatma Chowk-Ghatkopar corridor was scrapped.
