Waiting Upon The Lord March 16 The report I referenced - TopicsExpress

Waiting Upon The Lord March 16 The report I referenced yesterday contained this additional bit of information which is not altogether surprising; the two most favorite passages of scripture which people identify are Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd…,” and John 3:16, “For God so loved the world…” In the John passage, Jesus tells the Pharisee Nicodemus that he must be born again if he hopes to enter the Kingdom of God. Over the years I have met many people who tell me they have been born again, but I have never found unanimity about what being born again means. What most people seem to imply is they have a greater emotional connection to our Lord, and become more serious about the exercise of their faith: attending worship, reading their bibles, and being more committed to the life of prayer. All of which are admirable and necessary for an authentic faith life, but none of these things contains the whole of what it means to be born again. Nicodemus, as a Pharisee, would certainly have understood the necessity of a greater emphasis on worship, prayer, and attention of the reading of the Word, but Jesus wanted to push Nicodemus, and us, further, for these are mere means and not ends unto themselves. So, what does it mean to be born again? More to the point, what does being born again mean to you?
