Walk Through History in Breckenridge... The Breckenridge/Wheeler Area Historical Society offer the public a “Walk Through History” on September 15th at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Breckenridge. The program will begin at 1:00 and will highlight the lives of six individuals. By hearing the stories of these individuals, the audience will be treated to a glimpse of the past when actors portray the various honorees at their gravesites. The program will conclude at 3:00 when the last of the groups will escorted through the walk. It will take approximately 1 hour to complete the walk, and golf carts will be available to individuals who would have trouble walking the whole way. This year’s honorees include Wilbur Bott who was a sailor during World War II and was a victim of the worst loss of life incident in the history of the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis which was torpedoed late in the war. He will portrayed by Austin Brittain. Craig Zeese will play the role of Benno Hoffmeyer. Mr. Hoffmeyer was the original conductor, arranger, and composer for a group of musicians known as the Michigan Lumberjacks. They achieved quite a bit of notoriety during the 1930’s. They were featured in articles in the Saturday Evening Post and Colliers magazines and played on many large market radio stations. Another of the honorees will be J.P. Wierman who was the founder of the present day Breckenridge Insurance Agency. He and his family arrived in the Breckenridge area in 1871 so he saw the Plank Road and the Saginaw and St. Louis Railroad line arrive in the town. Rob Fleming, part owner of the Breckenridge Insurance Agency will play the role of J.P. Wierman. Lyle and Eva Bartrem will tell their story together when Jackie Earley and Travis Christensen portray the couple who were Breckenridge business people. They were the owners and operators of Lyle’s Service and played many other roles in Breckenridge history. Basil McKenzie who served the local area, the county, and the state , is the fifth individual on the “Walk Through History”. Mr. McKenzie was owner of the McKenzie Certified Seed farm and a former superintendent of the Breckenridge Com. Schools. David Briggs, who wrote the scripts for this event, will portray Basil McKenzie. The Historical Society will also offer DVD’s and dialog booklets of the performances for purchase on the day of the event. The audience members will be led to the different gravesites by tour guides in groups and there will be a bus at the end of the walk to bring groups back to their cars. In the case of inclement weather on Sept. 15th, the event will be held at the Breckenridge Elementary School.
