Walking Dead 2Nov2014 Beth awakens in a hospital. She has been cleaned, stitched, and her hand is in a cast. The doctor gives her a lollipop and apprises her of the situation. These survivors live in the top floors of a hospital in Atlanta. The place is surrounded by walkers and, if the need arises, they dispose of corpses by dumping them down an elevator shaft that opens into a zombie filled basement. The place is controlled by people wearing police uniforms. These armed altruists are led by a woman who is keeping civilization alive while waiting for rescue. She sends the men out to save survivors who become indebted for accepting care, food, and shelter. Beths job is to join the staff and perform functions that will make the men happy. The friendly doctor Edwards instructs Beth to give medicine to an injured patient he recognizes from the time before the zombie outbreak. Beth mashes up some pills and sucks up the semi-dissolved lumps into a syringe. Unsurprisingly, the patient convulses and dies after injection. Turns out he was also a doctor who could have provided medical competition. Unfortunately, Edwards was not a member of his medical plan. The laundry man, Noah, keeps the leader happy by supplying clean uniforms with stiff creases but one woman, Joan, didnt like her job and tried to run away. Her hand was either bitten during the escape or it was a work injury, but in either case they decided to cut it off. Her on the job medical coverage kicked in and they put her back to work. Beth makes friends with Noah and they plan to run away from the hospital. (Beth really needs to escape a particularly obnoxious guard). Beth sneaks into the leaders office to steal a key, unaware that inside hinges can be removed with a screwdriver, and finds Joan has killed herself in the leaders office. Good thing because mister obnoxious gets zombie interruptus by Joan while he is pawing Beth. Beth takes the key and grabs his gun. Noah has made a rope of towels and they use it to descend into the gruesome, yet scent free elevator shaft. In a nice touch, you can see Joans hand and the doctors half eaten cadaver in the shaft. No flies are visible and since they have been feeding zombies for years, I assume this must be a refrigerated basement. Beth expertly shoots walkers, fighting furiously to leave the area. She even stomps a zombie head to mush with her tennis shoe enhanced foot. Her struggle is not quick enough, however, and she gets recaptured by unhappy guards. Noah gets away. Beth is still thinking escape but the episode ends with her witnessing an unconscious Carol being brought in on a gurney.
