Walking into Heaven Prologue___________ Shuffling through the files that night doctor Heath noticed the number of lost cases that he had went through in the last year. “God, how could all these children die at such a young age and what did I expect, being a Pediatric Oncologist?” It was not the first choice on Jason’s list of jobs he wanted to do as a child, but now being in his mid-forties it was too late to change his career but at least it paid the bills. This being said it seemed to take a piece of his soul every time he held another child’s hand as they slipped off into what he supposed was a better place. At least that is what he told himself late at night while he tried to forget the faces of the children, the families crying in torment, and the preacher saying the last blessings over the little angels as they took their last breaths. The next morning after waking, Jason managed to drag himself from his bed and perform his normal day to day rituals even though he would rather have slept the day away. He began by combing his brown hair with the touch of grey on the sides that he would not dye out. Because he thought it made him look wiser. Brushed his perfect white teeth and went on his morning jog of four miles before eating a sensible breakfast containing just the right amount of protein and vitamins. Jason prided himself on staying in shape. He was lean, six foot tall exactly, 160 pounds, and had the abs of a gladiator. He sometimes joked to himself about how he would maybe one day find a girl that could run her hands across his wash board stomach. But for now, work was the only thing he concentrated on and besides, he did not want anyone else to have to deal with the pain he was going through at the hospital every day. After completing the morning activities, Jason grabbed his computer and headed to the hospital to make his normal rounds. Jason felt like a zombie, day in and day out as the same things happened. He would walk into the hospital, everyone would say “hello”. The single nurses would compete against each other biding for his attention. While the married ones would look on with disgust. He pretended not to notice but it all seemed trivial to him as he moved towards his first patient of the day. “Good morning Allison, and how is our trains today?” Jason exclaimed as he walked into young Allison’s room. Allison was six years old with long blonde hair and the eyes of the bluest sapphire. She was graceful in her speech well above her years. Even with missing her two front teeth, she tried to make every word as clear as a bird singing a morning song. “Well Mister Conductor fell on the tracks last night and got a boo boo on his knee.” “Do you think you can look at it after you have completed checking on me?” Jason enjoyed the stories Allison always came up with to try and get him to stay in her room longer. “That’s horrible! I will get on it as soon as I am finished looking over last night’s charts.” Jason did not mind giving Allison more attention than he did his other patients. Not because Allison had no parents due to being put up for adoption as an infant, but because of the hope in her eyes. It seemed to make him forget what he did for a living and just maybe, maybe he could save her life.
