Walking tour of Summit Avenue in Redlands set for Jan. 17. POSTED: 01/06/15 The Redlands Area Historical Society offers a walking tour of Summit Avenue in Redlands beginning at 9 a.m. Jan. 17. The tour will feature the homes and history of Summit Avenue. Tom Atchley, vice president of the Historical Society, will lead the tour, assisted by Bill Blankenship, president. The tour begins at Summit Point, 451 Summit Ave., and proceeds down Summit toward Cajon Street. The tour ends overlooking the formal gardens of the Lyon Estate near 52 Summit Ave. Cost is $10. Summit Avenue was the first of 12 Redlands Heights neighborhoods surveyed in 1887 and placed on the market in 1888, according to Atchley. Scipio Craig, editor of the Citrograph, dubbed the new residence tract Nob Hill, Atchley said. Three houses were constructed on Summit Avenue in 1888. Two of the houses were owned by brothers-in-law of Frank Brown, co-founder of Redlands. Benton Johnson managed the Benton Johnson Mercantile store in Lugonia as well as postmaster duties. Upstairs, Redlands founders Edward G. Judson and Frank Brown had their real estate office, according to Atchley. Edward Wilmot, attorney for Judson and Brown, sold the lots of the Redlands Heights subdivision because Redlands’ two founders were otherwise occupied. Henry L. Williams built a showplace at 25 Summit Ave. The house had a sweeping view of the valley at the head of Cajon Street, Atchley said. Williams placed his Gladysta Tract for sale in 1887. That land today encompasses Citrus Plaza or the “doughnut hole” of unincorporated land in northwest Redlands. Williams planted the large Mexican fan palms that adorn Palmetto Avenue and the other streets of the tract. Williams was a director in the Bear Valley Irrigation Co., which Judson and Brown began, Atchley said.
