Wall of Fame Words: Michelle Soliman Photos: Janine Perea Who would have thought that washi tapes could bring so much more life to a Filipino icon’s face? Heima Home & Lifestyle yesterday (30 August, 2014) launched “MixTapes: Pinoy Pop Icons by Ge Mapa”, a display of framed portraits of Filipino celebrities crafted from washi tapes. The event was held at Heima Brixton, Pasig City. The mini exhibit featured portraits of six acclaimed Pinoy personalities. These famous portraits include comedian Ramon Bautista (“Like a Pogi”), Diamond Star Maricel Soriano (“Chuvaness”), people’s champ Manny Pacquiao (“Pacman”), late great rapper Francis Magalona (“Man From Manila”), superstar Nora Aunor (“Superstar”), and the band Eraserheads (“Alapaap”). The portraits were displayed on black glass frames on the left corner of the store, which will be on display until the end of September. Every washi tape portrait is quite a wonder, making it fascinating to personally see and appreciate the beauty of a piece created with a rather unconventional medium. It is no question that it is, indeed, a unique concept. Did I mention that the artist is actually a Thomasian? The event also featured acoustic performances by Filipino talents such as Kaye Matriano, Hannah+Gabby, and Outerhope, as well as DJ mixes by Diego Mapa, Strict Rules of Polite Society DJs: Wallflowerparty and Liquid Software, while TodayXFuture provided food and drinks for the guests. The night’s event was also paid a special visit by one of the famous faces in one of the portraits. Former Eraserheads drummer Raimund Marasigan was in attendance. But of course, the true star of the event is artist Ge Mapa. As a graduate from the College of Fine Arts, Major in Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas, Mapa once again exhibited her skill and passion for art in this comeback with the new collection of portraits. When asked how she developed her passion for art, she explained that her father, who was working in an advertising agency, heavily influenced her lifestyle since childhood in seeing the true beauty of art. She further explained that her new collection of portraits was inspired by National Heroes Day, celebrated in the country every August 25. She said instead of national heroes, she and Heima thought of Filipino icons. The six personalities featured in the portraits were chosen because they were her personal favorites. She added that it took her about a month to finish all six portraits. When asked what message she has for young and establishing Filipino artists, she simply said, “Do what you think will work.”
