Walshestown FC 1 Naas Utd 3 KDFL Lumsden Cup Rd 3 A cracking little cup tie that ended as many expected with a victory for the Senior Division side, however there was definitely two teams competing in this game and Walshestown could count themselves unlucky to go into half time only level after taking the lead on 15 mins. The game started well and Walshestown set out their stall early showing a determination to attack and not just sit back and hold Naas at bay. The first goal arrived from a superbly delivered free kick from Cian Brannigan into the box where it found the head of Barry Molloy who found the back of the net with the nod down. The home side fought very hard and showed great discipline and compusure to maintain their lead as both sides had opportunities to add to the scoreline, just when it looked like Walshestown would go into the break ahead they conceded a free kick on the edge of the area which was hit towards goal and squirmed under the body of Dave McDonough to bring the sides into half time level. The second half started in the same vein as the first as either team could have found the breakthrough, but it was Naas who took their chance on 58 mins when they broke through the home defence to put their noses in front. As the second half wore on the superior fitness levels of Naas began to show and Walshestown were grateful to Dave McDonough for pulling off three fantastic saves to keep the lead down to one. The fight was still in Walshestown and the chances were still being created, they just couldn’t find that one lucky break they needed to get them back level, and then with 15 mins remaining just to prove that luck was not on their side today Naas were awarded a very dubious penalty which they converted to take the score to 3-1. To be fair to Walshestown they never dropped their heads and kept searching for a goal right to the end and forcing Naas to defend a lot harder than they might have expected to. A result that many would have seen as inevitable was not as straight forward as that. Walshstown can be extremely proud of their efforts today and take it forward into their campaign for promotion from Division 2.
