Walt Merrell D.A. Covington Co. I want to clear up a misconception that seems to be circulating around the County. Last week, Opp resident Mack Watley was jailed for violating a Court order to clean up his property. Apparently, some are under the mistaken impression that our office has some involvement in this matter. We do not. In fact, I know very little about the case, other than what information I have gleaned from the phone calls I took. We have never been involved in this case. The City of Opp initiated the prosecution and they are still prosecuting the matter. I do not make any comment at all about the merits of the case, nor should anyone infer that I have an opinion about the matter. That fact is, I dont have enough information to have an educated opinion. I am simply posting this now because I fielded a few misguided phone calls from people concerned about the issue, who were under the impression that we were prosecuting the case. While I will always make myself available to anyone who needs help, I can not, by law, insert myself into Court proceedings that do not involve our office.
