Walt Whitman was influenced both by the Quakers and by the transcendentalists. (Not the biblical Quakers so much as the other Quakers, the Deist or Hicksite Quakers who believed in the Inner Light, rather than some God OUT THERE, or up there). Whitman wore the Quaker plain dress (often brown), and in this picture he asked the photographer to take his picture with his hat on (indoors) in the Quaker manner. But he never joined the faith, though he did attend Meeting now and then. The Hicksite Quakers did not call themselves Christians, only Friends.
