Walter Evans just called a contact who works at the CDC. Their take is that our health care system could handle a an Ebola outbreak and that it can be handled here and contained because the virus is only transmittable through body fluids. When Walter told him that now a nurse who was wearing protective gear (allegedly) has contracted it, the response was, huh. They dont think a quarantine of 21 says in the afflicted countries would work because people are still so mobile, and they fear an outbreak more in a densely populated place like Rio. However, I pointed out (just had to interject) that we do have immigrants in this country who are still practicing tribal customs and caring for sick family members and who may not have high levels of sophistication to know what they have to do. Then we have ERs who make mistakes! It makes more sense to set up a quarantine in the afflicted countries and not let people leave until they have tested negative. Plus we send in an arsenal of help. We absolutely have to contain and eradicate Ebola in West Africa. Can you imagine a tent city at JFK or OHare Field with travelers this winter? Please call your senators and state reps asap!
