Walter Kerr was fond of Helen Hayes’s Amanda at City Center. “To watch Miss Hayes spread her thinning taffeta and waltz vaguely about a dingy room,” he wrote, “only to pause in sudden, deathlike, but yearning stillness before the photograph of the man who deserted her is to see this ‘ugly, babbling witch’ in a new, and equally valid, perspective. Amanda Wingfield is here a spectre to make you cry.”
