Wander over Ancient Lands. Third wander on the year. This particular walk started & ended in the village of Avebury, Wiltshire. Its claim to fame is that part of the village is surrounde by an ancient stone circle which dates back to Neolithic times. I took the path out of Avebury & headed towards the Ridgway ... another part of Wiltshires ancient history. This is an old drovers track that links Overton Hill, Wilts to Ivinghoe Beacon, on the edge of the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire. I crossed the path & entered an area known as Fyfield Down. This is whare many of the huge sarcen stones that make up the many rings of Avebury originated. My wanderings then took me down into the Kennet Valley where I happened upon an isolated cottage which by looking at it was at least a country mile from any road. The path then took me to the River Kennet... & no further as the river was running high & I hadnt thought to bring a small boat with me. I doubled back & followed the A4 westbound until I reached The Bell at Overton & took a country lane into West Overton & then onto East Kennet & back onto the footpath to West Kennet Long Barrow, This is the finest example of a Neolithic burial chamber anywhere & I would recommend a visit if you are ever in the area. Onwards to Silbury Hill, again a must-see ..... you cant really miss it from the road & it does dominate the area somewhat! Final stretch over Waden Hill, Along the Avenue & back into Avebury for a well earned coffee at the NT cafe near the museum. Distance today 9.33 miles Total distance so far 33.25 miles Distance to go 66.75 miles
