Want to get students to exercise critical thinking skills in delivering a speech in a speech contest? Well, dont start by providing them with topics in the form of noun phrases that they will only narrate in a narrative form, describe in a descriptive form, or expose in an expository form, but never argue in a persuasive form; give them topics taking up the form of yes-no questions that require them to position themselves and argue on and reason for it; which is exactly what I do for our speech contest soon to commence as of this. Some topics in this fashion that touch the life of youths who make up the majority of our students are: 1. Is having a smart phone/gadget really necessary for students? 2. Can cheating during an exam be tolerated? 3. Does having a girl/boyfriend boost learning spirit? 4. Do talent-seeking shows like Indonesian idol, X Factor, or AFI really help youths find their inner strengths and abilities? 5. Will smart phone/gadget communication kill natural everyday communication? 6. Is tweeting/facebooking usually only saying small trivial matters a waste of time? 7. Does blogging help aid youths’ expression of self and ideas? 8. Are juvenile delinquencies part of youths’ growing-up process that will eventually go away? 9. Do internet and ICT only distract youths from studying and not attract them to learning? 10. Are school brawls/fights a sign of group solidarity that is justifiably acceptable? 11. Can many extracurricular activities in between school learning jeopardize students’ study? 12. Should there be manners in using smart phones/gadgets in public? 13. Does the habit of browsing already now replace the art of reading? 14. Does the National Exam with only multiple-choice items really assess students’ abilities and fairly determine their passing? 15. Does social network communication only bring up unnecessary interaction that tends to lead to something negative? :-)
