Want to hear a great story of a good guy beating adversity and injustice????? Congratulations to one of my closest friends, John Asti, one of the best saxophonists and all around woodwind musicians I have ever known. He is now the musical director at Marin School for the Performing Arts in the Bay Area in CA. This is one of the top performing arts high schools in the nation! John was chosen over several top applicants from around the country, and I know he will do a great job. This is especially great considering that Johns stellar 20 plus year career as a teacher was marred back in the spring of this year by the administration at Brian Cram Middle School due to a principal who disliked John, and who used every unethical tactic to discredit Johns performance. They dumped every high profile problem child into his choral classes. Thats what they do there when they have no place for a troubled kid. They use the elective classes as dumping grounds. They cancelled the kids going to Spring Festival because the principal resented the fact that John ordered the buses without consulting him, which he was legally within his rights to do.But who really lost out.....the kids! Then John was written up for showing West Side Story in his class because it was considered inappropriate. Hard to believe, right? Then his contract was not renewed with the school district due to a scathing evaluation by the school administrators. And the school district never questioned it!!! The teachers union was useless as well. So John started soliciting his services out of state, and was fortunate enough to be recognized and appreciated for his abilities. Its interesting to note that the Clark County School District claims it needs 650 teachers. I know a great one they just lost.
