Want to know how many people you should be responsible for at a concert if you are in a band? Its easy, lets do some public school math. Lets take 300 as a capacity, as most venues locals play are in this range. Now lets take how many bands there are. My shows are 4-5 at these smaller clubs, but some like to do 6-7 to over compensate. Again keep in mind this is all locals, no national act to appeal to a broader audience. Lets go with the magic number 4 to show it only takes 4 bands to have a good night. NOW. Most deals for larger bands and such are set for 60% sold of your cap so thats 180 people of a 300 cap room. So lets make that number the target number. Now with 4 bands and a promoter/venue, thats 5 networks (6 if you booked an outside promoter and not directly through the venues manager). Lets go with 6 to make the math easy (remember public schooling here). So 180 target people divided by 6 networks of unique people sets the needs of each band and the venue to bring 30 people. That really isnt shit in a city of 2 million people. NOW lets take that 30 people and divide the work load amongst your band mates who, individually, also has a unique network of friends/family/coworkers that only they can reach. Most bands have 3-5 people so again lets go with 4 and make your goal 10 people per band member. Pretty simple. Focus on what you can, dont get discouraged with the NOs, and keep growing your networks, so every show you do can be successful on your end.
