Want to know more about the Bokwa moves or Bokwa steps? Does the idea of drawing letters and numbers with your feet sound weird... dumb... confusing... or? I understand! When I first heard about Bokwa from a Zumba instructor friend, I Googled it and what I read and saw in videos definitely looked and sounded kind of weird... and I thought, stupid. I mean, I am a passionate Zumba dancer and instructor who just loves all of the international and Latin rhythms, the fun choreography and the moving to the music in authentic ways. How could drawing an L on the floor with your feet possibly be fun? Those were my thoughts and reactions... and so, I filed the idea of Bokwa away, never to be considered again. Or so I thought. Bokwa Buzz in Boise And then, the woman who introduced me to Zumba became totally infected with the Bokwa passion. Once she started talking about it, she wouldnt quit! First she went to Oregon and got certified as an instructor, dragging her teenage (I hate group fitness!) daughter along. And they BOTH loved it! Next thing, they were off to San Diego for a week long training with the inventor of Bokwa, Paul Mavi, to become what is called a B.E.S.T. (Bokwa Educational Specialist and Trainer). And then, there was no stopping her! This former Zumba addict posted on Facebook only about Bokwa. Bokwa this, Bokwa that. Soon, she had scheduled her first Treasure Valley instructor training and was kicking it off with a master class to show everyone what the buzz was really about. I admit it... I couldnt resist trying it. I signed up for the master class and even started to wonder if I should pursue the training. After all, my mentor was saying Bokwa would be the next huge fitness craze. I was struggling to fill my Zumba classes, with so much competition... maybe Bokwa would be easier? I went to that master class and I found out just how much fun the Bokwa moves really are! Signed up for the training on the spot! Drawing Letters & Numbers With Your Feet bokwa steps like supamanWhat does that really mean? Well, you learn simple step patterns that do take the shape of certain letters, numbers and other random symbols or concepts. You learn them as basic patterns, but then you can put your own style, or flavor, on them. You can also decide what level of intensity youll use to do them. Walking through, bouncing, jumping, leaping, shaking your booty... YOU decide. And once you know the Bokwa steps, you can go to any class and keep up/follow... with no difficulty whatsoever. And theres no real choreography in Bokwa. Each instructor just throws the basic step patterns in a random sequence during the course of a song and a class. You might do one Bokwa move 5 times, and then switch to another one for 10 times... or 7... or 3... or however the mood strikes the instructor. That instructor will also move the class along based on how people are doing. Some of the more complex Bokwa moves are broken down into parts to help you learn and master them. Level 1 Bokwa Moves 1+1: This is the most basic Bokwa step and is used to get started, in between other step patterns and to recover. L: This basic up, down and over pattern draws the capital L on the floor. Variations are L-Shake and L-Walk. C: Just like it sounds, a block-letter C! 0: The Zero take you around in a circle as you call out the moves... 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and kick! LEFT: This Hip Hop reminiscent move is a favorite of most classes... a skip, squat, right-left-right... Phezulu: An African word, but all funk and flavor! Supaman: Pretend you are the man of steel as you move right left and forward B: My favorite pattern and probably one of the hardest. Not usually done in the first few classes, but definitely worth the wait! J: The quintessential Bokwa move... you see it on the advertising and in most videos... super fun! Square: Up-Right-Back-Left... you just drew a box, or square, on the floor. Criss Cross: Basically 1+1 done to all 4 walls (around the world). And then, there are the remixes, which are variations of each of the Bokwa moves listed above. And then when you inject the freedom of each instructors flavor, the Bokwa steps and variations are basically limitless. Which is what makes Bokwa so much fun for so many for so long! Anyone Can Do It anyone can do bokwa moves and stepsBecause no dance ability is needed, no real rhythm, no memorization of tricky choreography... anyone of any age or ability can be successful at doing Bokwa, thereby enjoying fitness and burning calories without even feeling like youre working. Kids and seniors can dance together in a class, right along with all the folks in between. And men who hate to dance... they LOVE Bokwa! Beginners, Bokwa addicts of several months, seasoned instructors... everyone can have the same fun, doing their own thing to the same basic Bokwa moves. You really need to try it, if youve never experienced Bokwa! To try Bokwa is to believe...
