Want to read a story about the fall of an evangelical empire, with a gay twist? This is the story of the decline of my family, a decline which, appropriately, began right around the time I was born and marked with my grandfathers last name as my middle name (I know this has always confused people but, yeh, Randy Roberts Potts is my full name.) There were not one, not two, but three gay people in our family that we know of, although my brother has wisely chosen to stay out of the spotlight. My mother is quoted in this article saying that she is waiting for my brother and I to come back to the Lord - fundamentalist Christian speak for waiting for your child to repent and come back to their personal world view. My brother and I have been taken out of the will and havent been invited home for any reason for almost ten years and, frankly, its better this way. Fundamentalism of all stripes, whether its ISIS or the Assemblies of God, does not allow enough leeway for real live flawed human beings to live and breathe openly and freely. No, Christian fundamentalists are not out there making videos of beheadings, but they are lopping off family members every day - sometimes, surveying the damage, Im not sure which is worse. The best thing about this story is that its about fundamentalism in decline.
