Warblr: the app that hopes to reverse the fortunes of declining bird species Birds are indicators of the environment. If they are in trouble, we know well soon be in trouble”, Roger Tory Peterson. In the UK, numbers of birds such as grey partridge, turtle dove and the starling are down more than 85% since 1970s. Worldwide we are losing our biodiversity at a terrifying rate: between 1000 and 10,000 times the natural extinction rate, according to experts. But Warblr hopes that through the use of new technology they might just be able to help. Warblr is a smartphone app that automatically recognises birdsong, with a mission to re-engage people with the natural world, and to gather data to aid conservation. The app will become part of a citizen science project, so that each time it is used to identify a bird, conservationists can map which species are being spotted when and where.
