Earthquake Details - Location: Sulu Sea, about 112 km (70 miles) south-southeast of Cagayancillo - Magnitude (Depth): 6.1 (37.9 km/23.5 miles) - Time/Date: 1729 Dec. 29 - Affected Areas: Zamboanga Peninsula and Central Visayas - Tsunami Warning: No Summary A magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck in the Sulu Sea off the west coast of northern Mindanao Dec. 29. The tremor hit at 1729, 112 km (70 miles) south-southeast of Cagayancillo at a depth of 37.9 km (23.5 miles), and did not generate a tsunami warning. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Local officials may temporarily shut down airports, rail lines, and other infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Any disruptions that occur during the shutdown will probably take longer than normal to resolve given that Tropical Storm Seniang is currently moving through the area; however, service will likely resume as quickly as feasible if no damage is found. Aftershocks are possible in the region in the coming days and could lead to similar disruptions. Advice Plan accordingly for strong aftershocks. Allow additional time for air, rail, and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Power outages cannot be ruled out.
