Warning: disturbing pics of my pet. My maltipoo girl (who is only 6.5 pounds) was attacked by a neighbors farm dog, a sort of australian shepherd type. I cant decide if the pictures look as bad as it truly is, or if the pictures are not as bad as it really is! I had arranged for farm neighbor to come help me w/project, and his dogs followed him cutting thru pasture to join him on road to my place. I had been to his place a couple of times w/Baby who I also call Puppy, and they had been rambunctious but I held her those times anyway. Nothing aggressive.... So I was finishing a walk with her when neighbor arrived a tad early. I picked up Puppy who is actually 9.5 years old so she wouldnt run toward pickup truck. Neighbor called his dogs into the cab. I had not realized they followed him. I thought he brought them. Since the dogs were not new to each other, after he parked, his two jumped out of his cab. Both are cattle /sheep herding type dogs. Cant remember the breed. The younger one ran rapidly to Baby which concerned me, but before I could react, I saw the older one crouch and advance in a hunt position. That same moment he charged. I dont know if he thought it was sport, or he intended to kill like he does the squirrels, but it lasted probably 90 seconds but seemed more like 2.5 or 3 minutes! It was almost slow motion and horrible to be helpless. The big dog would grab her by skin and shake her and throw her while she was screaming. There was no way she could bite back. She was trying to flee and cower at same time. Meanwhile I was on knees trying to grab Puppy when big dog would move her away and Id have to stand and charge toward dogs, yelling to let go, stop! Again and again. I was afraid mans dog would turn on me as I kept trying to grab Baby away but had to shove that out of my mind. She was repeatedly shaken and tossed into dead leaves and grasped and pulled away again and again. Seemed like forever of course. Neighbor ran up and got them separated. His younger dog was more bouncing around, not participating, thankfully. Again it probably lasted 90 seconds, I dont see how it could have been less. She had bites and punctures on back of neck and torso, and hair pulled out of skin that wasnt broken. I got her in house and dabbed at her with wet paper towel trying to ascertain what the damage was. I quickly decided I couldnt treat her and called veterinary. They said bring her in and so when I got there, doctor could see it was worse than even I thought. Water was already building up under the skin of some of the wounds. Those ivory colored shunts or tubes you see are to drain water away from body. The wounds are also even worse than I realized because she had puncture wounds and messy wounds hidden in the matted hair. They shaved her many places after they took her away from me with my permission of course, and did what they needed to, after she was put under. She has stitches in at least 5 gashes, and 3 shunts. She has shaved areas with other wounds too. They had to sedate her, knock her out, to do what was needed. I meanwhile had another emergency with a tenant (of my farm partner who is travelling), who had no heat and I had to drive to Marietta which at least kept me busy. By the time I got back and got something to eat, since I knew it could be a long weird night with her, she was ready for me to take. $364 but the Bartow Animal Clinic in Cartersville was good and caring. She got gas anesthesia,,,, poor doggie,,,, laceration stitching with drains, injected anesthesia, and a pain injection of Buprenorphine whatever that is (have to google it, or actually I use startpage to avoid being tracked). It is nearly impossible to hold her without getting a wound pressed against my shirt one way or another. I have blood on two shirts already. I also got prescription drops of Metacam for pain and Clindamycin drops for antibiotic. She goes back Friday to have the shunts removed, which are held in with the stitches. Now she is resting sort of fitfully, not tossing or fussing anyway, next to me on couch. They said she would be on the anesthetics for hours yet. I will give her a measured dose of Metacam around midnight and more next day(s). I have a soft hand towel on her for a blankie. She looks just awful like the pictures show but I expect a full recovery. If you believe in praying for pets, I ask for your prayers for this truly innocent dog who has never experienced pain or violence from another dog. Thank you for reading.
