Claudia Thompson 3 months ago Having the allotment to grow them? Now to be honest, that just seems like a real scam there. Why should the Government care if you grow just as much food as you can? Who are you injuring by doing that? Reply Mary Myerson 2 months ago The point of rationing was to make sure that everyone got a fair share of the food available in the shops. Not to injure anyone. The government encouraged people to grow as much food as they could so that they didnt have to buy so much, which left more of the food available to be sent into the towns and cities to feed people there who couldnt necessarily grow their own, it also freed a lot of food up to be sent to soldiers on the continent. Growing your own food helped to keep the cost of meals down, and make rations go further. A family with an allotment would be a lot better fed than a family without. Fruit and veg are full of vitamins and minerals and energy, and therefore are a brilliant way to help your food rations go further, and to improve the health of everyone. Reply Claudia Thompson 2 months ago My point is why do you need the Government to allow you to grow food. If its your own house and property anyway? Reply Mary Myerson 2 months ago It wasnt a case of the government allowing it. Just that most people didnt use their garden/allotment effectively. The government were trying to change that :) and get people to grow loads of their own food. zuditaka3 years ago Did anyone in Britain take up snail farming during WWII ? Or frog farming? Like your nearby French neighbours? Did anyone consider breeding rats for food? I know some types of rats are eaten and cooked in Asia. Are hamsters--we dont have them in Australia--edible like the Guinea pigs people keep as pets and for food? Sylvia Olesky2 years ago Thanks! I think this is how people lived in Poland and cooked for long after the war. :) I remember the gardens of my aunts & everything was always fresh and healthy.
