"Warwick in History" - The Red Swan Inn opened in Warwick on this day in 1901. It stood on Oakland Avenue, where the entrance of the country club now is located. In 1900 Mayor Clinton Wisner had formed a stock company of Warwick men to build an inn. Mayor Wisner, an architect, designed the Red Swan, described by an important guest in 1912 as a "gem" and the nicest hotel in the country. People visiting at the inn came to Warwick by train with many men commuting while their families summered here. In a later brochure, the Red Swan was described as a strictly up-to-date hotel with all modern conveniences in "one of the most delightful spots to be found anywhere." Only a five-minute walk from the station, the inn was surrounded on every side by beautiful scenery. It had private and public baths, steam heat, and a passenger elevator. Verandas were a feature and a spacious dining room had walls almost entirely of glass. Also featured were a well-kept lawn, a vegetable garden of five acres, and a nine-hole golf course. The inn was torn down in 1958 when some Warwick people got together to start the present Warwick Valley Country Club.
