Was just reminiscing the other night.. 1982, Im 21 and in LA for the very first time, on my first proper tour with A Certain Ratio. We get pulled up by the LAPD first night there for looking suspicious (the WWII military fatigues might have had something to do with that). Have a bad nights half sleep in the legendary Tropicana motel - now long gone - and in the morning stagger to the equally legendary Dukes diner next door - also now long gone. Waitress shows me to a table, right next to.. Joe Sample. Okay, America, I think to myself.. Im here..
