Was talking with Dr. Powers this morning on the Monday Past and Present history segment about the history of Mercy Flights. What a great story. George Milligan was an air traffic controller in Medford in the 1940s. His friend contracted polio, and died while on the several-hour drive to Portland for treatment. (PDX was the only city which had an iron lung) So he got the community behind him, and they raised around 1200 dollars to buy a military surplus wooden Cessna twin engine to get the air ambulance service going. As sad as it was that Milligan lost his best friend, consider the amazing legacy of life Milligan has left us all. Thousands of folks have been saved through this air ambulance service. When it started, it was a 2 dollar per year subscription. Even today, at $80 for a family, its still a bargain.
