Was wondering about the custom from the Lemko region mentioned here - about chasnyk - garlic at the beg. of the Sviata Vechera. Found my Rizdvo na Lemkivshchyni book [Christmas in the Lemko Region] (Lviv, 2004). Some fascinating rituals. Hope to work on translating parts of it. One interesting thing -- in some villages, the candle was not placed in the middle of the kolach, but into a bowl of wheat or rye seeds. In Krasnyi Brid, it was placed in a bowl of sprouted wheat. The wheat was soaked for about 2 weeks, so that by this night, the sprouts were about 10 cm tall. For a good harvest in the new year.
