Washington AmeriCorps Marine Educator position ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR: AMERICORPS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Join our fast-paced, fun organization and support our mission: Inspiring Conservation of the Salish Sea! The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is seeking four Environmental Educator AmeriCorps Members for 10 ½ month positions starting October 1, 2013. These stipend-supported positions are sponsored by the Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps program. PTMSC is a public non-profit marine education facility located in Fort Worden State Park, Washington. Our two buildings house a small hands-on Marine Exhibit with local near-shore animals and plants, a Natural History Exhibit featuring a fully articulated orca skeleton with exhibits connecting her to emergent issues of toxics in the marine environment, a citizen science research lab and two fully equipped classrooms. DUTIES: All positions will • Support public and volunteer education through the operation and interpretation of our exhibits • Manage & train volunteers to assist in the care of animals and exhibits • Engage the public through tours, interpretive programs, and social media • Teach hands-on, inquiry based school programs in exhibits, labs, and field • Assess student and volunteer learning to document program effectiveness • Coordinate and support training programs for volunteers • Assist in scheduling volunteers • Support volunteers in our gift shop including basic cash handling and retail sales MEMBER ASSIGNMENT: In addition to sharing the above duties, each AmeriCorps Environmental Educator Member will be assigned a particular area of responsibility. • Natural History Exhibit and Volunteer Program Educator: Will support volunteers, collections, and programs in both exhibits, with an emphasis on the Natural History Exhibit. Will assist the Volunteer Coordinator to support our volunteer program, including scheduling shifts, coordinating trainings, assisting with volunteer appreciation events, updating training materials, and entering data. Will work with Education Staff to coordinate and teach our Free Science Classes, including communicating with teachers, scheduling schools, organizing program supplies, assessing student learning, and documenting program effectiveness. • Marine Mammal Stranding Educator: Will work with the Marine Program Coordinator to engage and train volunteers in our area to collect data from live and dead stranded marine mammals, including our necropsy program. Will answer our reporting line and dispatch volunteers, manage our stranding database, create blog posts, work on signage and brochures, and assist with necropsies. • Citizen Science Assistant: Will supervise the daily operation of our Discovery Lab, including overseeing volunteers, processing samples, managing and analyzing data, working with statistics, posting results to our website, and coordinating events. Will work with the Citizen Science Coordinator to learn current protocols, train and recruit volunteers, provide community outreach about lab topics, and collaborate with scientists and agency partners. • Marine Exhibit Educator: Will focus on supporting volunteers and collections in our Marine Exhibit. Will assist the Marine Program Coordinator in training and supervising volunteers in animal care, collecting animals, designing exhibits, updating volunteers on new or interesting animals, managing collection data, solving problems with the salt water plumbing system, organizing supplies, and maintaining exhibit equipment. OPPORTUNITIES: • Serve with a team of professional educators developing state-of-the-art science education, programs and exhibits at a nationally recognized facility • Support current research through projects in citizen science • Receive training in natural history, marine biology, ecology, teaching and interpretation techniques, and care of cold water marine animals QUALIFICATIONS: • Must have a degree or background in Marine Biology, Environmental Education or a related field • Must be energetic, self-motivated and willing to learn • Must be a team player • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills • Must be in the age range of 18 to 25 • Must be able to work a minimum of 1,700 hours in 10 ½ months • Must have a current CPR and First Aid certification • Must pass required federal background check • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National or Permanent Resident Alien of the United States PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands below are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
