Washington, Illinois Tornado Information Friday, November 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Debris removal. The City of Washington appreciates the efforts of the residents in this process. Residents have done what the city leaders have asked of them. The goal is to strike a balance between the city’s responsibility and the responsibility of insurance companies regarding debris created by the tornado. The quickest way to recovery is by removing debris to allow for rebuilding. Next steps. Homeowners, please contact your insurance companies regarding debris removal. Each homeowner, with assistance of their insurance coverage, should make efforts to clear as much as possible, as quickly as possible. No additional debris should be moved to the public right-of-way with the exception of large appliances, chemicals and hazardous waste items, and vegetative debris. Starting Saturday volunteers will be removing these items from the public right-of-way. Be sure to seal and tie large appliances shut and cut vegetative debris to six feet in length or less. Please place dumpsters on your property, at least 10 feet away from the back of the curb and at least 10 feet away from fire hydrants. Do not leave dumpsters on the street or public right-of-way. Do not place hazardous waste, large appliances, or electronics in dumpsters. Insurance. To file a complaint, contact the Illinois Insurance Department’s Consumer Assistance Team at 866-445-5364 or online at https://insurance.illinois.gov/applications/ComplaintForms/default.aspx. Monthly Siren Test. This test will not occur in Washington Tuesday, December 2. The City of Washington has conducted a silent test of the sirens and has confirmed these are operational. Due to recent events, these sirens will not be sounded as scheduled Tuesday in an effort to alleviate stress for residents. FEMA. If you were impacted by the tornadoes, you may register with FEMA for grants and low-interest loans. Call 1-800-621-FEMA or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) or visit disasterassistance.gov/ to apply for disaster assistance. The FEMA disaster number for Illinois is 4157. You must contact FEMA to apply for assistance. If you get a call from someone asking for your personal information, this is a scam. Scams. If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, or if you see suspicious activity, please contact law enforcement at 309-444-2313. You may also contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Office at 847-417-4893. Building permits. City of Washington staff will be at the library at Five Points, starting Monday, December 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday to issue building permits for residents in affected areas. Burn ban. Tazewell County has declared a burn ban for Washington Township until further notice. Absolutely no burning is allowed. Individuals violating the burn ban may be charged with a petty offense and fined. Multi-Agency Resource Center. Open Friday, November 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 401 Walnut Street in Washington. Also open Saturday, November 30. This is a disaster relief one-stop-shop with helpful information for residents of the area. Power. Contact Ameren at 800-755-5000 with questions about your service or to cancel service. Parking ban. A parking ban for the affected areas is in effect and will be enforced from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. in these areas until further notice. Volunteers. If you need volunteer assistance for debris removal, please call 309-698-5001. If you are interested in volunteering, you must be 18 years or older. Individuals may call 309-698-5002 to register. Groups may call 309-698-5003 to register. Volunteers can also register at the Illinois Central College CougarPlex, located on the ICC East Peoria campus at 1 College Drive in East Peoria (near the tennis courts).
