Watch: Jason Manford follows in Peter Kays footsteps to star in The Producers at the Palace Theatre Video loading Jason Manford will star in a new touring version of The Producers musical, which opens at Manchester’s Palace Theatre in March next year. Jason is the second local comedian to star in the Mel Brooks classic, following in the footsteps of Peter Kay who played outrageous, cross-dressing theatre director Roger DeBris in 2007. The Salford comic will take on the role of producer Max Bialystock’s timid accountant Leo Bloom – a part he says he has always wanted to play. He told us: “I loved the film, and then I saw it when it became a musical and I saw Lee Evans do it, and I saw Peter Kay here,” he says. “Leo was the character I’d have loved to play. But I guess I always thought, liking my food, I’d end up with the Bialystock part!” But Jason exclusively told The Diary that he also hopes training for the show, which begins in the new year, might have the “Strictly effect” on his figure and help him shed the pounds.
