Watch Leafcutter John as he creates SOUND from LIGHT using a instrument that he BUILT HIMSELF from scratch. Brain was exploding! So lucky to have discovered him as an opener for Imogen Heaps gig at the Roundhouse last night. This gig was part of a Reverb festival that she organized to showcase cutting-edge musical technology (aka. her musical gloves) and demonstrate how we can fuse new tech concepts with musical imagination, creating a WHOLE NEW VISION for the FUTURE OF MUSIC. As both a scientist/engineer and a music lover, this kind of stuff BLOWS MY MIND and I will be at the edge of seat as this new vision start to unfold. Making microphones out of home-made crystals.... It’s really simple, you get bicarbonate of soda and then you get cream of tartare (potassium hydrogen tartrate) which are both used in baking. You dissolve them together and heat them up to a certain point and when it cools down you get these amazing crystals which have a property called piezoelectricity, which means that when you vibrate them they create electricity, and quite simply, if you plug that electricity into an amplifier you will hear a sound of that vibration. So it’s really fascinating that you can make a microphone or a pick up out of cooking materials. That’s something I just found online and thought, wow I’ve really got to try that. By the way, Leafcutter John also happens to perform in various bands including the Mercury- nominated, experimental jazz band Polar Bear. He is playing a festival in Brussels in a few weeks that tune-yards will also be at, and I told him he needs to approach Merill Garbus with his technology and tell her about Immis musical gloves! If I could see any other female artist pioneering this technology, it would her her. xxx https://youtube/watch?v=Vz64eoEAlEs
