Watch Site of the Week: Lamu Old Town dates to the twelfth century - TopicsExpress

Watch Site of the Week: Lamu Old Town dates to the twelfth century and was an important religious and trading center in East Africa. The town is organized in a labyrinthine pattern of narrow winding streets and clusters of dwellings. The architecture shows influences of African, Arabic, Indian, and Persian traditions, and much of the historic fabric is constructed from stone, lime, coral, and mangrove poles. Techniques used to decorate the buildings included carving wooden doors and covering walls with paintings and sculptural plasterwork. With the prospect of increased tourism and uncontrolled development, there is a need for a sustainable development plan in order to protect the cultural heritage of the town.
