Watch out!! The most common scam we are hearing at the moment is the taxi scam from the Maglev station when people are arriving to Shanghai. The Maglev is amazing and dont let this put you off but please be aware that there are taxis cruising around at the Maglev station to take you to your hotel who just KNOW that you have just arrived and are ripe for the picking!! Follow these few simple rules and you should have no problems. 1. Do not go with a taxi driver who is standing outside of his car and tries to negotiate a price with you. 2. Avoid dark red taxis (these are not all dodgy but a large number are from this station) 3. Always get the receipt 4. Get a taxi which you just saw someone getting out of, or which is driving along with the light in the dash on as opposed to a taxi stopped waiting on the side of the road. If you are staying at the Bund, Downtown, Peoples Square or the French Concession, your taxi should range between 60-80RMB to your hotel from the Maglev station (it may be more late at night or in terrible traffic). Dont worry if it is 20RMB either side of this - if they are going to rip you off, youll know, it will be more like 300-900RMB they will try and charge. If they do try this, ask your concierge at your hotel to step in and help and take the receipt!!!
