Watch the AMA scream about this. The Institute of Medicine has called for dropping regulations that prevent nurses from practicing “to the full extent of their education and training.” The National Governors Association has asked states “to consider easing such restrictions and modifying their reimbursement policies” so that nurse practitioners are more involved in primary care. And the Federal Trade Commission has even questioned whether some states’ scope-of-practice laws might be anti-competitive, recommending that such regulations be no more stringent than patient protection requires.
