Watched Always. And THAT concludes the Spielberg Plane Movies, Scott. Jeez, he made a LOT of those! Well, this is the most meh Spielberg film Ive seen, Id say. No strong feelings either way. I think Id rather see the film this movie is a remake of. That film was set during WW2 and was about combat pilots, whereas this is about forest fire fighters. Not as.... intense, maybe is the word. I think the movie starts great. Crazy pilot makes one too many close calls... and dies. And then it becomes a ghost/guardian angel movie. Richard Dreyfuss as the invisible guardian angel to a young pilot who gets involved with his old girlfriend played by Holly Hunter. Heres the fatal flaw of this picture. The young pilot SUCKS! Hes not a horrible actor, but hes not great either. He doesnt have the charisma that makes me want him to end up with Hunter. You make this movie today, youd get Jon Hamm to play that part and it would be perfect. This guy who I honestly cant remember the name of, and didnt go on to do much else, is a rare bad casting choice by Steven Spielberg. The second half of this movie doesnt really go anywhere surprising. And I know I say this a lot, but this movie would work so much better as a TV show. The concept of a guardian angel like this I wanted to continue, not just end after 2 hours. It reminded me a lot of Dead Like Me, I wonder if Bryan Fuller took any cues from this movie....... probably not. Richard Dreyfuss is solid here. His schtick always works for me. John Goodmans solid, too, I wish hed work with Spielberg again. So its a C+/B- kinda movie. Some nice ideas, touching in spots, brings a smile to your face. But not all that memorable. Like I said, the most meh Spielberg film Ive seen.
