Watched Natural Born Killers. Wanted to watch a nice, calm, quiet, relaxing sort of movie, ya know? This is the 2nd time Ive seen it, and its a movie thats better when you know what it is. When you know just how insane a film it really is. I might be wrong, but I get the feeling this movie was a blast to make. 11 months to edit, but on the day it had to be a gas. Certainly the most fun movie Oliver Stone has made, perhaps. Story by Quentin Tarantino, who is clearly a big Badlands fan. With this and True Romance, he loves the idea of murdering couples in love. The script was re-written by Stone and company. Id love to see what Tarantinos version would have been. But Stone sure took it to a different place. The movie is very much divided into 2 halves. Theres the 1st half dealing with Mickey and Mallory on their killing spree. And the 2nd half with them in prison. I think I prefer the 2nd half. Its less crazily assembled and easier to watch. The insanity is more in the onscreen events. That prison riot. Jeez... its like a zombie movie. And a great zombie movie. :) I think Alien 3 would have kicked some ass if it was set in THAT prison. Alien would have got its head ripped off. The only actor I think isnt great in the film is the usually outstanding Tommy Lee Jones. Said it before, I think his over the top acting, much like in Batman Forever isnt his best work. Hes too nutty. Better is Tom Sizemore as Scagnetti (also the name of the parole officer in Reservoir Dogs). I watch Sizemore in this movie and wish he didnt ruin his own career. Hes a great actor. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are fantastic in the film. Harrelson in particular. He makes a great psycho. But the real gem here is Robert Downey Jr. as Wayne Gale, the Australian (RDJs idea) shocker TV journalist. The guy steals every frame hes in. When he joins the riot and goes crazy with Mickey and Mallory, golden. Im shocked he wasnt up for Best Supporting Actor that year. Steven Wright has one scene that I forgot about where hes interviewed as a psychologist (great casting) and it made me laugh out loud. Mallory Knox has said that she DOES want to kill you. I never really..... believe what women say to me. The first half of the movie IS good, but sometimes its so insane that Im taken out of the movie, thinking about how it was done. I think the animation we see dates the movie. It looks like 90s MTV animation. Maybe thats exactly the point, but I dont like it. But not the sitcom I Love Mallory showing us her origins with her family. Disturbing material, but produced as a multi-camera laugh track sitcom. THAT..... is freaking brilliant. One of the best scenes in any Oliver Stone movie. And Rodney Dangerfield as her father. I think Dangerfield, as Jay Mohr would say, took a lot of talent with him when he died. Dangerfields amazing in his scenes here. Getting in a line from his act in, too. With this food, we pray AFTER we eat! Its a crazy goddamn movie. I couldnt blame someone if they said they didnt like the film. But I think its superb.
