Watching G. Jauch show on the Snowden debate tonight, it remains clear that those German arguments brought forward by the likes of Stroebele & Co are fixed on the accusation that the US has insulted German sovereignty, that the Germans are far better at living up to standards/values of freedom and liberty than the US, and that Snowden would be welcome in Germany as a hero who changed history. Another illustration of some Germans as posturing to be the morals marshall on the world stage. Whats missing in some parts of the German discussion is a recognition that the US debate is further ahead of Germans than they recognize and that there is common ground in a greater need to share a strategy in reigning in a phenomena we all dont quite grasp rather than spending time grinding axes, posturing for home consumption and acting as if this is all about them. Lets all widen our lens for a change. This challenge is much bigger than all of us put together. We are forced to figure out how we find the right equation between how we use the power to connect in connection with the power to protect.
