Watching the BET awards made me wonder what makes it ok to have a one race TV channel/awards show in this day and age? If the team name Redskins is so offensive to some that our own president gets involved to eliminate this name from our vocabulary, how is BET (Black Entertainment Television) acceptable to everyone? Would a TV channel called RET (Red Entertainment Television) featuring almost exclusively people of American Indian decent be acceptable? Could white, brown, yellow etc skin colored people have their own exclusive race based TV channel without anyone batting an eye or citing racism? I bet (no pun intended) that some will find my questioning of BET to be offensive or at least raise a few eyebrows but I challenge anyone to explain how this is not a clearly hypocritical double standard. Btw, Lionel Richie just gave a great speech saying he tried to make his music compete against the best across all styles and races. Is BET ultimately helping or hurting the very people they are trying to represent?
