Watching the frazzled Mom of a toddler go crazy running after him who keeps running away and throwing whatever he can get his hands on. He is laughing and keeps looking at her for reactions. She reinforces his behavior by lighting up like a Christmas tree; engaging in continuous eye contact, saying, No! Mommy said no! Sit down! Come here! Sorry sir! Watch out maam! As she picks up what he threw, he grabs another item and throws it across the lobby, repeating the light the Mommy Christmas tree cycle. I feel horrible for her, and I want so much to tell her, Stop making eye contact. Dont use your voice. Go directly to him. Forget the magazine he threw at another customer waiting in the lobby for a second, pick him up and simply say, I need a calm body and a quiet voice. then hold him and let him tantrum. Eventually he will calm himself down. When he does say, Nice calming down. and your car should be ready for pick up at that point. When walking out with the child in your arms, just offer a polite blanket apology to everyone in the lobby with, Sorry. He is showing off his throwing, running, and tantrum skills. He is truly gifted, I tell ya. Nah! I wont step in. Its not my place. And its way more fun to watch the repeating Christmas tree lighting of mom scenario. ROFL on the inside.
