Watching todays episode of Satyamev Jayate, I was thinking about a different definition of waste that I had come across a long time back when attending a seminar by a waste management firm. The classic definition of waste is anything that is found no longer useful and hence eliminated or discarded. However, this definition put waste in a completely new light. It says, waste is any resource that is in the wrong place or hands! How true when we think about it. What we discard as waste and useless is converted into gold by such people by careful processing / recycling and hence adding new value to it. In the same way how nature makes compost out of organic waste and convert it into manure. In fact, nature does not consider any resource as waste! It adds or finds value in anything. So to add value even in waste is nothing but a natural process or being in tune with nature. The only thing is, it should be in the right hands or at the right place, as how the organisation called Goonj collects the old rags from us and literally helps some people go from rags to riches. It is the same with even people. Those whom we write-off as waste or useless, could be actually used less so if they are in the right place or in the right hands they may flourish and become successful. So is the effort wasted on the wrong people. It is not that the effort is actually a waste, but where we chose to put them was wrong. Hence the key to un-waste anything is placement - where it should be placed. And if there is a place for everything and everything is in its place, we would waste less - including the time spent searching, or buying extra because we did not know we already have them and many such, and even the space to store! A little effort to make sure the resource is placed correctly could do wonders in reducing if not eliminating waste or wastage. Like segregating and placing our own trash. Henceforth, before we act in haste to declare something as waste, why not spend a little time to deal with it as a resource that needs to be correctly placed and do our bit to make it reach the right place or hands. Not only would we help un-waste it, it would leave us with a fine taste as well!
