Waterford hit 3 goals as they overcome Westmeath in All-Ireland SHC qualifier by thescore.ie/ Brian O’Sullivan found the net twice for the Deise while Maurice Shanahan also raised a green flag. Waterford 3-22 Westmeath 0-14 A DOMINANT DISPLAY in the second-half paved the way for Waterford’s victory over Westmeath in this afternoon’s All-Ireland SHC Phase 1 qualifier against Westmeath in Mullingar. The Deise, who were warm pre-match favorites, had their work cut out against Brian Hanley’s team in the first-half who impressed early on in front of their home fans. The teams were tied at 1-7 to 0-10 at the break with Waterford grateful for Ballygunner youngster Brian O’Sullivan, a member of this year’s victorious UCC Fitzgibbon Cup winning team, finding the net to keep them in the hunt. And O’Sullivan grabbed his second goal of the game midway through the second-half to propel Waterford into a 2-15 to 0-11 lead and essentially settle the match. Westmeath had made the early running to lead by 0-5 to 0-2 after 16 minutes with Brendan Murtagh and Derek McNicholas amongst their point-scorers. But Waterford then drew level at 0-5 apiece with Maurice Shanahan showing up well in attack. Westmeath moved in front once more before O’Sullivan raised a green flag to help the Deise draw level at the break. Waterford, who overcame Offaly in Tullamore in last week’s preliminary round match, stepped up the intensity after the break with Shanahan and Seamus Prendergast notching fine points. Then O’Sullivan hit the net for the second time in the game and Waterford were able to relax in the final quarter with manager Michael Ryan giving game time to substitutes, including veteran Tony Browne who featured just two days short of his 40th birthday. Maurice Shanahan rounded off the day’s work for Waterford by notching their third goal of the game late on to seal their spot in Phase 3 of the qualifiers.
