Water’ is the subject of this year’s National Poetry Day, Thursday 3 October: An Ode To The Ladies Of The Portland Cornish Gig Rowing Club To all you seafarers sailing this day, As forward you go on your weary way, Through green waters of the English Channel, Past Lulworth cove and into Weymouth bay. If you are down to the gunnels and need a new rig, You may be lucky enough to pass a red rowing Gig, Just a feast for your eyes, much to your delight, On the rowing club ladies, a most wonderful sight, It is a delight to watch the shapely maidens row, As they pull on their oars to make the Gig go, And dipping their oars down for all they are worth, To pull the boat forward through the raging surf. Challenging the elements for all their duty, Never have mermaids known such beauty. So where ever you are in foul or fair weather, Remember those ladies, who all pull together, I was in the bar with the harbour side view, A vision was passing from out of the blue, Of those wonderful ladies pulling their Gig. As they glide gently forward and back to their rig, And onward into my dreams. Anthony Foster
