Way to go CAT CHANCE …thank you for your emergency service Thank you Leanne Symmington & Ashley Boss RIP Blackie **** Diane James-Cooper in Sarnia, Ontario writes: On Saturday afternoon I was over at my next door neighbors. They told me there was a black cat in-between their shed and our fence. When I went over to look I could tell that this cat was in trouble but he was way at the back and could not get to him plus we thought he was a feral cat because his nails on his front and back were extremely long. We got him some water and some food thinking that would help. He got up and was very uneasy on his feet but managed to take a drink and then went back to his spot. We left him for a bit to see if he would come around. When I went to check on him he was gone and I found him in my back yard under a chair. Myself and my neighbors Jan and Renee checked him and we knew he was in really bad shape and needed medical attention right away. We put him in a cat cage to keep him safe and not run away while we tried to get some help for him. That seemed to upset him as he was panting so I let him out in my pool shed. He could not even move but somehow managed to crawl behind the pool filter where he lay in a pool of water. After calling the Humane Society several times and getting a message that the lines were busy and to leave a message we then called the police for the Animal Control which got us nowhere because they were closed and would not be open until Sunday at noon. I remembered an organization that my sister Diane told me about that helps feral cats called Cat Chance… I went on the web-site and left a Facebook message and within a very short time I received a call from Leanne. She was in the United States on a boat and gave me some vets to call and that she had a volunteer coming from Oil Springs to help me out. Two of the vets I called I actually got a “live” person. I was told that because I was not a customer that there was nothing they could do for me and offered me no assistance at all. I asked them what I was supposed to do and they said again...sorry there is nothing we can do for you. I then called a couple more vets and got their emergencies phone numbers but when I called I was told that the closest place I could bring him was London. I also called 310-SPCA and was told the same thing. Finally an angel arrived by the name of Ashly. She took control of the situation and called Blue Cross Animal Hospital who said they would look at the cat because she takes her animals there. The vet met us in 20 minutes. The prognosis was not good and his internal organs were shutting down and his heart beat was very rapid. He figured that because the nails were so long that he had been stuck somewhere for about three weeks without food or water. He told us that the humane thing to do was to put him down which is what we did. It was heartbreaking to say the least and when this wonderful vet asked us if he had a name I said yes...Blackie...his name is Blackie. We stayed with him while the doctor administered the shot and we patted him and cried. You could tell that he had been a beautiful cat with big green eyes. I felt so bad for him but I got some comfort that he did not die alone and there was two us with him that loved him in his last few moments of his life. Also, Ashly took Blackie’s body and is going to bury him in her yard which is full of birds and butterflies. I want to thank my neighbors Renee, Pete, Richard and Jan for pulling together and trying to save Blackie. I want to send a very special thank you to Leanne for calling me right away and doing everything she could to help me on the phone. And thank you, thank you Ashly for driving all the way in from Oil Springs...you truly are an angel for all the volunteer work you do and the compassion you have for animals. If you want to know more about Cat Chance google them and go on their Facebook page and check them out. They do amazing work with only a handful of volunteers and they could do with some extra help, food, blankets and kitty litter. Also, I don’t want to mention which vets that could not help me but have spoken with them about my concerns. I also found out something very interesting that the Animal Control is not on call 24 hours a day to save money and the vets in Sarnia end up getting these calls over and over again which is not their responsibility...it is up to City Hall and I can see their point. I was told to call city hall and put in a complaint which is exactly what I will do. RIP Blackie **** Cat Chance has a NEW WEBSITE!
