Wayne State University – Center for Urban Studies Governor’s / Detroit Mayor’s AmeriCorps Urban Safety (AMUS) Initiative Title: Urban Safety Community Organizer Position: Wayne State University – Center for Urban Studies is seeking AmeriCorps members to fill 28 Full-time and 4 Part-time positions within The Governor’s– Detroit Mayor’s AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program (AMUS) Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to increase public safety and decrease victimization in Midtown/North End, East Jefferson Corridor, and three other targeted neighborhoods in Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast Detroit. Each AMUS member will participate in one or more of three sets of activities: (1) Crime mapping and analysis using software and techniques that have been proven successful in crime reduction. Analyses will be presented regularly in collaborative meetings, leading to the identification of hotspots, focused patrols, and other strategically implemented tactics. (2) Improving neighborhood guardianship through community organizing to help residents forms block clubs and other networks to build community, strengthen trust, and take ownership of the neighborhood space. Leveraging this renewed sense of community, members and residents will undertake crime hot spot organizing, vacant lot cleanups, abandoned home board ups, and neighborhood watches. (3) Reducing victim attractiveness and susceptibility, known as Target Hardening, through training on home safety, home safety assessments, installation of door and window locks and better lights on houses, and the use of Club car locks and VIN etching to reduce automobile theft. These techniques decrease the chance of individuals being the “target” of crime, as well as improve home security and reduce victimhood. Service Description: Key Responsibilities Members will be expected to work with neighborhood resident groups to assist in the following: • Assume primary responsibility for planning and executing a work plan of duties for recruiting and engage residents to fulfill organizing goals; • Take and route messages from participating community residents and partners; • Communicate and monitor completion of a broad range of tasks emerging from these organizing efforts and ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of constituents; • Track participants and progress toward achieving project logic model indicators • Familiarity with targeted Detroit areas (Preferred candidates from the University district area) • Developing and maintaining workplans, task lists, and project timelines and the ability to report out on them on a regular basis • Coalition building and community organizing with extensive Program Benefits • Pay/Hours: $12,100 for full time (minimum of 1700 hours-40 hours a week)/$6,050 for part time (minimum of 900 hours-20 hours a week) participation. • Education Award upon successful competition of service: Full-time member will receive an education award that has a value of approximately $5,550 for full time / $2,775.00 for part time • Training provided • Permits working at another job or attending school during off hours Service Areas • Community and Economic Development • Community Outreach • Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Special Knowledge/Special Skills • Community Organization • Strong Leadership Skills • Excellent writing and public speaking skills. • General computer skills • Advanced computer skills and Internet set-up skills helpful Work Scheduling and Requirements • Full or Part Time • Minimum of 2 years of college or 5 years experience in related fields • Minimum age 18 years old. • Program Location: Detroit, MI • Contact Ramona Rodriguez-Washington 5700 Cass Ave Detroit, MI 48202 [email protected] (313) 577-0970
